How we rank

The same four steps for every guide

Nothing is ranked until it has been through all four.

  1. 01

    Shortlist

We look at what is on sale in a category and pick the five products a buyer is most likely to weigh against each other on price, specification and availability.

  2. 02

    Research

For each product we read the specification sheet, the manual, the warranty terms and the retailer listings, and we weigh consistent patterns in verified buyer reviews. Where a claim can only be proved by measurement, we rely on the maker’s data and certification marks.

  3. 03

    Score

Every product in a guide is scored on the same five criteria: stated performance, price and value, ease of use and cleaning, build and materials, and the guarantee behind it.

  4. 04

    Re-check

Prices, stock and new models are re-checked before each update, and every guide shows the date it was last verified. If a reader reports an error, we correct the guide and note the change.

The same five criteria in every guide
  1. Stated performance

The maker’s own numbers, checked against the manual, the listings and the marks on the box.

  2. Price and value

The price at the checkout, plus refills, batteries or blades, against what the same money buys elsewhere on the shortlist.

  3. Ease of use and cleaning

Set-up, controls, the manual and the washing-up, judged for a first-time owner on a weeknight.

  4. Build and materials

What it is made of, how it is put together and how it survives a drawer, a dishwasher or a suitcase.

  5. Guarantee

The warranty and the returns terms behind it, and who honours them in the EU.

About

About HomeNoted

HomeNoted is a buying-guide publication for the kitchen and the home. Each guide compares five products on the same criteria and ranks them, whether you are choosing a chef knife, a milk frother or a garment steamer.

The name is the remit: home products, rated.

Corrections. If a price, a specification or a claim is wrong, we fix it and note the change on the guide. Use the contact page to report an error.
